RESEARCH STATISTICS ON MENTAL HEALTH DISORDERS IN ADOLESCENTs
FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MENTAL HEALTH
Holden's journey throughout the novel has him seeking interpersonal connections, desperately attempting to be able to communicate with others. Holden's lack of and desire for companionship demonstrate the negative consequences of being an outcast in one's society. Holden's inability to conform to the rigid societal structure and culture isolates him, leaving him lonely and in a depressive state. Holden lacks motivation in school, has trouble making friends, and appears to suffer from anxiety, depression, and some sort of social anxiety. These statistics reveal the crippling number of adolescents who suffer from any sort of mental health disorder, which this project has attempted to attribute to the strict social codes that are put into place by modern society. It is important to note that these statistics come from the year 2015, for it highlights how these issues have persisted for decades.
