THE Adolescent rebelA Multigenre Inquiry Project
|
multigenre inquiry projectabout this websiteThis website is the product of an inquiry into the adolescent rebel figure in young adult literature as part of an English Education Content and Pedagogy course. It was inspired by the story of the well-known rebellious character Holden Caulfield, the protagonist of J.D. Salinger's novel The Catcher in the Rye. The essential question posed for this project is "How do societal views of teenagers as rebels reflect and/or conflict with expectations of the adolescent experience?" Holden exists both within and without in society, being of a upper middle class family in 1960s New York, yet refusing to abide by the societal norms imposed upon him by his class. Holden finds the culture and structure of the social hierarchy detestable, and is thus seen as rebellious in his refusal to conform. But nonconformity has its price, and Holden is thus outcasted, in want of friendship and a positive mentality about the world. This project explores the various ways in which Holden's experience can help students answer the essential question, practice creative writing and assessment, be unbiased in their analysis of the messages presented, and explore different mediums as tools for comprehension and critical thinking. Each page on this website presents a "genre" that could be helpful when teaching the novel The Catcher in the Rye, the overall theme of adolescents, or how to use a critical lens like the youth lens when exploring literature.
